3 Ski Resorts in the Berkshires

Have you ever heard of “the rule of three”? It seems to come out in fairy tales, books, and movies frequently. The idea is that things seem to be more satisfying, entertaining, and better when they come in threes. I don’t know if you can prove that scientifically. But I do know that when applied to skiing at the 3 ski resorts in the Berkshires, you will come to believe it.

You’ll enjoy this brief preview of what’s in store for you on this particular winter visit to the Berkshires.

Overview of winding road surrounded by snow ith a green sign that says The Berkshires
Here’s a snapshot of the three ski resorts that will make your time at Devonfield Inn extra fun.

1. Ski Butternut

Established almost six decades ago in 1962, Butternut has evolved to being recognized as a favorite location to ski. Located in the East Mountain State Forest, Butternut features a magnificent forest setting of evergreen and hardwoods – what a delightful place to be.

Skiers enjoy the 100 acres of well-groomed and sculpted runs. The blend is 20% beginner, 60% intermediate, and 20% advanced. Ten lifts are ready to take you where you want to start. If the winter weather hasn’t been cooperating, all trails have snow making equipment.

Looking at an aerial view <https://skibutternut.com/the-mountain/trails-conditions/trail-map-and-videos> will get you ready to take your first run. Plus, ski lessons are available for beginners and those more experienced. If you don’t have skies or don’t want to bring your own (or if you forgot to pack them), rentals are waiting for you.

2. Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort

Opening in 1948, Jiminy Peak has provided winter activities to visitors for decades. Situated in the Berkshires, it is the largest ski and snowboard area in southern New England. Enjoying nature while skiing is a beautiful way to get the full benefits of winter.

There are 45 trails listed from green (easiest) to double black diamond (challenging), and nine lifts will transport you to the run of your choice. A view of the Jiminy’s trail map and resort map will give you an idea of what is waiting for you. You’ll be thinking, “I can’t wait to get going!” Private and group lessons are available. Suppose you need to rent your skies? Jiminy Peak is here for you. You will be ready to take off down the slopes.

3. Catamount Mountain Resort

Catamount has come a long way since its first opening in 1938. Located on Mount Fray in the Taconic Mountains, Catamount is in a prime location. Because of the focus on developing the slopes, it’s become one of the best mid-sized areas around. The natural New England setting provides exciting opportunities for winter recreation.

Here you will relish in taking to the slopes of 40 trails of various difficulty. There are 35% designated green trails, 45% blue, and 20% rated black diamond or double black diamond. Eight lifts will carry you to your starting destination. An overview look at the trail map will get you excited and help you to plan out your day of skiing adventure.

Need Snow?

What if it doesn’t snow when you plan your getaway to Devonfield Inn? Catamount has made sure that snow is available by adding close to 200 snow guns and miles of snow-making pipe. You can expect full value on your winter visit. Private and group lessons are also available to help you delight in your day of skiing. And then you’ll be ready for the next outing. Do you need skies, a snowboard, or a helmet? You can rent them at their rental shop.
